theplacetobe.net has installed and configured Google Search Appliance to offer two applications:
Having one set of information which covers the city means that partners can add new content to their site's search facility and deliver benefits to their site users. A search on the Council's site for information about health-related services, for example, can offer results from the Primary Care Trust - driven by the user's needs rather than knowing who runs which service.
The partnership is using the search engine's capabilities to share content and create a network of content between local sites. It is estimated that there may be as many as 500 local sites - with information about Brighton & hove, and the search engine has been designed to cater for as many as these sites possible.
The partners are now starting to work together to translate this into benefits for local people. They are currently adding the basic search facilities to their sites - searching their own site and delivering high quality results on some of the most important local sites. This will replace an existing site search facility but use the power of Google to deliver the results.
The network of content currently includes all the partner's sites plus a growing network of local sites. This is being added in an organic way, in response to the needs of users and requests from lcoal site owners who want to be in the search engine. There will be no charge for being in the search engine but the partners are developing policies about the quality of information held in the search engine, as well rules abpout what is appropriate, such as not including adult content.
